Tirana Travel Guide
The largest city and the capital of Albania, Tirana is located just 20 miles from the Ishm River. This populated metropolis offers a pleasant blend of ancient culture with hip cafes and restaurants.
In the city's centre are Pazari and Mujos, Tirana's oldest districts bordering the Lana River. These state-protected areas, now named "Return to Identity," have been restored and are excellent places to stroll and experience some the city's history.
Tirana dates back as far as the 5th century. The medieval Tirkan castle was built in 520 AD and restored later in the 18th century. In the 15th century, under the Ottoman rule, a mosque was created and became the city's commercial hub. Caravan routes from various parts of Europe were established, connecting Tirana to Europe's trade industry. These monuments are still popular tourist sites.
Tirana Tourist attractions
The symbol of Tirana is represented by the majestic Clock Tower (Kulla e Sahatit). It was built in 1820 and stands 35 metres high in the city's centre. This area is always buzzing with activity and is a great place to watch the bustle from the plethora of restaurants serving the best local cuisine.
Also in the area is the National Historical Museum. Located on top of the front façade is a picturesque mosaic of the "Albanians". There are many rooms offering Tirana's ancient history up to the Hoxha's rule. See how Tirana was affected by the Mussolini and Hitler regime during World War II.
A definite destination to add to the itinerary is Mount Daiti. It is a serene get-away from the crowds. Take an express cable car to the mountain and enjoy its pristine air.
Transportation Around Tirana
Hiking is a great way to see the panoramic view of the city. Hotels and restaurants are available and most accommodating.
The Mother Teresa Airport is only 16 miles from town and can receive flights from many European destinations. Taxis and car rentals are available. If you are driving, it is highly recommended to get travel insurance to protect you and your family. You can rest easy knowing you are covered in case of any emergency.
