Canberra Travel Guide
The capital of Australia offers much for its small size. From historical and political monuments, to mega shopping centres, to natural reserves, Canberra has a host of tourist spots and activities for any taste.
Canberra is one of the younger established cities. It was originally intended as the country's capital in 1913 to offset the conflict between Sydney and Melbourne for capital rank.
Heavily populated with politicians, Canberra has since developed its tourism, thanks to the diverse culture and acceptance of many identities from other countries. Public buildings and businesses began taking shape and now offer more options for the traveller.
Canberra Tourist Attractions
The previous headquarters for the Australian government, Old Parliament House, is a must see. Daily tours are available to most of the main rooms, such as the Cabinet room and the Prime Minister's Office. See the rooms as they were from the 1920s to 1988. Learn about some of the most unique and high profile cases. Also on display are photographs of Canberra's past.
Canberra has some talented local artists. Their works, along with hundreds of other paintings, sculptures and various types of Aboriginal art work, are displayed at the National Gallery of Australia. The building has beautiful modern architecture and houses the largest art galleries in the country.
A leisurely stroll through the Australian National Botanic Gardens is an excellent way to relax and enjoy the country's unique native flora. Water dragons are the park's featured items.
The best place to see a 360 degree view of this beautiful city is on the 95-metre Telstra Tower. It is the communications tower for Canberra and is toured day and night by visitors around the world. The revolving restaurant is an added treat during sunset.
