Ghent Travel Guide
Ghent is situated in Flanders, Belgium and is the capital and biggest city of the East Flanders province. The city has a long and rich history, first gaining recognition during the Middle Ages as one of the most affluent cities in Europe. Recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the city is filled with fascinating medieval structures and fascinating points of interest. Ghent is connected to the sea by the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal and has become an important port destination with an impressive harbour.
Ghent has affectionately been dubbed 'the flower city of Belgium.' Visitors will be charmed by the azaleas and other flowery treats that are grown virtually everywhere and sold around the world. Along with stunning natural beauty, the city has a plethora of noteworthy attractions and Ghent tours, including excellent examples of modern architecture, fascinating museums, the intricately designed Saint Bavo Cathedral, an opera house, fun-filled festivals, the renowned Gravensteen castle and a prominent university.
The city is home to some truly fascinating museums. The Ghent Museum of Fine Arts has a superb collection of paintings that dates from the 14th century, as well as fine collections from contemporary artists. The Museum voor Industriƫle Archeologie en Textiel showcases recreations of workshops and stores from the 1800s.

The city boasts having some of the most sumptuous cuisine in Belgium. Fresh seafood is also one of the city's main dishes, while local beer is the drink of choice. There is a large concentration of restaurants in the Patershol quarter. Here you can find a number of eateries serving up international gastronomy.
Ghent has also developed into a modern centre with a youthful ambience. The city is home to Belgian State University. The university area is swarmed with trendy eateries, bookstores and pubs. The historic city centre is a demonstration of medieval Flemish wealth and has become a popular meeting place for students, locals and visitors alike.
