Sarajevo Travel Guide
Sarajevo is located in the Sarajevo valley, surrounded by the majestic Dinaric Alps and situated around the Miljacka River. Sarajevo is the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has a history spanning back to the prehistoric times. The modern city arose in the 15th century and has since become famous for its religious mixture and mountainous regions. More recently, Sarajevo has been recovering from the long military siege during the Bosnian War. It's quickly regaining prominence as a major economic and cultural hub.
Sarajevo is a welcoming city that has somehow kept its magnetic charm and unique atmosphere. Although the city is overflowing with historic buildings, soaring mountains, and intricately designed cathedrals, Sarajevo is also a city that has a wealth of bustling shops and boutiques, busy cafés and fantastic restaurants. Sarajevo has a fantastic tourist infrastructure and was named by Lonely Planet the 43rd Best City in the World.
Sarajevo Tourist Attractions
Culture seekers will enjoy the numerous theatres and museums on offer. Among the more noteworthy attractions is the Museum of Sarajevo, the Ars Aevi Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the National theatre of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Jazz connoisseurs will undoubtedly be delightfully entertained at the Sarajevo Jazz Festival. This festival takes place at the Bosnian Cultural Centre and has hosted such jazz legends as The John Butler Trio and Richard Bona. The Sarajevo Film Festival is one of the most recognised film festivals in the country and attracts major celebrities from around the globe.
Sarajevo is also very much a sports city. It hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics and co-hosted the Southeast Europe Friendship games. Football is by far the most popular sport. The city hosts both the FK Sarajevo and the FK Željezničar football clubs. Basketball is also popular in the city, as is tennis and kickboxing. Adrenaline junkies will find thrilling rock climbing and skiing opportunities on the Jahorina and Bjelasnica Mountains.
