Sofia Travel Guide
Located at the foot of the mountain of Vitosha, this metropolis is not only Bulgaria's capital, but it is also the largest city in the country. The major structures are unique with a beautiful blend of Communist and European-style architecture. Being the oldest capital city in Europe, Sofia (which means 'wisdom' in Greek) has managed to preserve its history while keeping up with today's society.
The Orthodox churches are iconic and significant landmarks to the city. UNESCO World Heritage listed the Boyana Church, from the 10th century Bulgarian Empire, as a protected site. The Alexander Nevski is one of the world's largest Eastern Orthodox churches. One of the oldest Christian churches within the Balkan Peninsula is the 4th century Church of Sv Georgi.
Sofia Tourist Attractions
Visitors worldwide also enjoy the numerous historical museums that depict the different Empires and wars fought, including the conflict from WWII, throughout Sofia's expansive timeline; the National Museum of History, the National Archaeological Museum and the Earth and Man National Museum are toured most frequently.
The Vitosha Mountains ski resort offer the best in nature vacationing. Whether it's hiking along the pre-marked trails and connecting with nature or a major trek to the peak, tourists and locals alike enjoy the fresh crisp air year round. Ski slopes are marked for different levels of skiing and snowboarding experience. Instructors are on hand to help the first-timers as well as offer tips to the pros.
Transport Around Sofia
Sofia Airport is only a few miles from the city centre and offers daily flights to and from most major European destinations. Taxis and shuttle buses are readily available. All major car rental agencies are accessible at the airport.
It is advisable to take precautions to make sure you lock your car doors and carry minimal belongings while touring the sites due to the high level of pickpocketing and auto theft. Exercising care will be more than sufficient.
Before travelling to a foreign country, it is highly advisable to get travel insurance. In the event of an accident or illness, medical expenses can be costly. Travel insurance can provide you and your family assurance that your trip will be the most memorable.
