Any skiers looking to try their hand at other activities should ensure that they have winter sports insurance that covers them for this, or face being without protection in the wake of any mishaps.
This is the warning that has been given by the Ski Club of Great Britain, which told the Mail on Sunday that many travel insurance policies do not cover skiers for other winter sports, and that they should therefore shop around for the policy that suits them best.
It is important that such a policy covers all medical expenses, with this cited as the cause of over a third of all winter sports insurance claims made, but also baggage, personal liability, and inability to ski because of lack of snow.
Betony Garner of the Ski Club of Great Britain commented: 'While manystandard ski insurance policies now cover snowboarding, most do not cover the full range of winter sports.
'Many skiers might try dog-sledding, tobogganing or ice skating withoutrealising that if they have an accident that requires medical attention, they will not be covered.'
Over a million holidaymakers left the UK for skiing holidays abroad in 2005, and a similarly high number are expected to do so this year.
The Ski Club's warnings strike a similar chord to those made byinsuresupermarket.com, who last week advised skiers to make sure theirwinter sports insurance policy covered every eventuality from equipment breakage to avalanche closure.
