Berlin Travel Guide

The largest city in Germany, Berlin is best known for being one of the greenest cities in Europe. Over 60 per cent of its area is either parkland or river. You will find that Berlin is not only green and lush, it is also a city of great historical significance, and was once home to one of the most iconic symbol of communism – the Berlin Wall.

Today it is home to some impressive architecture of various styles built over hundreds of years. Furthermore, it is now a major cultural hub offering galleries, museums, and concert halls. Adding to Berlin’s character is the city’s nightlife, which is unusually vibrant, with clubs open until the early hours of the morning.

Berlin Tourist Attractions

Visitors will find the area in and around central Mitte offers the best sightseeing attractions. In central Mitte is the main street of Unter den Linden. The western end of Unter den Linden is home to Brandenburg Gate, which leads to the large city park of Tiergarten.

Northwest of Brandenburg Gate is the government square known as the Reichstag (Platz der Republik). Here visitors can go to the top of a Norman Foster-designed glass structure to enjoy a panoramic view of the city. South of the Brandenburg Gate is another architectural statement, this time built by Peter Eisenmann. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe comprises 2,700 columns of undulating heights, taking up the size of a city block.

The eastern end of Unter den Linden is home to Berlin’s most beautiful cathedrals, squares, and museums. Here visitors can stroll around German and French cathedrals, and Museum Island (Museumsinsel). The latter is an UNESCO World Heritage site, which is marked by old-world architecture and home to many museums including Pergamonmuseum, Altes Museum, and Alte Nationalgalerie.

Travel Around Berlin

Getting to Berlin is easy. The city’s two airports, Tegel and Schonefeld, are among the busiest in Europe and offer numerous flights to all major cities around the world. The city is also serviced by a network of roads linking it to the rest of Germany and Europe.
