Hamburg Travel Guide

The rivers Elbe, Alster, and Bille meet in Hamburg, gracing the city with many streams and lakes. Hamburg’s harbours are among the busiest in Germany, and the city centre itself is home to many beautiful churches and famous museums.

Many of the most popular tourist attractions in Hamburg can be found in the old and new towns. The old town, or Altstadt, was partially destroyed in the fire of 1842 and restoration work has been in progress up until recent years. Popular buildings in the area include: the neo-Romantic St Petri and the neo-Renaissance Rathaus.

Hambourg Tourist Attractions

For fans of Baroque architecture, Hamburg’s Neustadt is home to the largest Baroque church in northern Germany. This famous landmark, Michaeliskirche, is the city’s most prominent building. More Baroque architecture can be found in the area of Peterstrasse, where the Johannes Brahms Museum is located. To the east of Neustadt, visitors can stroll through this quaint shopping district where boutiques, restaurants and nightclubs are housed in Baroque style buildings.

To experience Hamburg’s vibrant and active art scene, the Kunstmeile (Art Mile) is home to many of Hamburg’s galleries and museums. Among the most famous include: Hamburg Kunsthalle, Galerie der Gegenwart and Deichtorhallen, all of which are worth a visit. If you enjoy nightlife, then don’t miss the entertaining and fun districts of Schanzenviertel and Karolinenviertel, where clubs stay open until late.

Travel Around Hamburg

One of Germany’s largest airports is found in Hamburg. The city’s international airport offers flights to and from 130 destinations all over the world. There are direct links to major European and American cities, and connecting links to other less accessible regions.

Getting to Hamburg city centre from the airport is made easy by the many regular and cheap buses which leave every 30 minutes from the airport. Taxis are also available and take about 35 minutes.
