As the capital of Lower Saxony in Germany, Hanover has earned a reputation as a global hub for commerce and industry, while also maintaining a vibrant art scene. Since hosting Expo 2000, Hanover has remained a prime spot for exhibitions, including the annual industrial trade fair CeBIT. This pedestrian-friendly city offers visitors large expanses of greenery and pleasant shopping and dining options.

Hanover was largely destroyed during WWII, leaving a limited number of historical buildings behind. About 40 significant pre-war buildings that remained have now been relocated to one central location. Travellers should visit the Great Garden of Herrenhausen, a 17^th century copy of the French gardens at Versailles. These gorgeous baroque gardens can be visited year-round, with spring and summer being peak times.

For those seeking more history, the Marienkirche is a 14^th century church worth visiting, and the 15^th century Town Hall has models on display portraying Hanover at different stages through history.

Hanover boasts several fine museums, including the Sprengel Museum with its impressive collection of modern art, situated picturesquely by Masch Lake. The Landesmuseum and the historical Kestner Museum also display interesting collections.

Hanover’s pedestrian centre, Kröpcke, has a large range of shops and eateries, and is conveniently located at a central point on the underground tram line. The Opera House and the large clock here are popular attractions. There is even a designated walking tour for visitors, marked by a red line on the pavement.

Tourists sightseeing can relax in one of Hannover’s many green spaces, such as City Park, located near the impressive Hanover Zoo. The Tiergarten is a large recreational forest, while the Eilenriede is an even larger area of parkland located right in the city centre. The manmade Lake Masch is a pleasant place to spend the afternoon as well.

Hanover hosts exhibitions and festivals year-round, so travellers are sure to coincide with one of these events. Oktoberfest and the Christmas Market always promise festivities, while the International Firework Competition and the Small Festival in the Great Garden are more unique to Hanover. The summertime Rubber Duck Race is a great choice for families with young children.
