Heidelberg Travel Guide

This lovely university city has a rich baroque history that has long attracted tourists from all over the globe. Situated in the Neckar River valley near the Odenwald (Forest of Odin), this city houses Germany’s oldest university. The historical and intellectual charms of Heidelberg promise something for every tourist and many tourists choose to take a tour of Heidelberg so as not to miss any of its lovely tourist attractions.

The intriguing ruins of the 13^th century red stone castle is a popular tourist attraction, with a quirky apothecary museum and the largest wine barrel in the world. Visitors can have a glass at the wine bar inside or enjoy a drink at the small outdoor café.

Heidelberg University is also worth a visit, and travellers can take advantage of free admission to the Botanical Gardens. The university is renowned for its academics and history, with many of its faculties considered to be the best in Germany.

The original stone Old Bridge has a medieval gate leading into the town. The historical city centre, or Altstadt, has a charming maze of narrow cobblestone streets lined with picturesque houses. The Hauptstrasse is a mile-long pedestrian street with a huge selection of shops. The adjoining side streets offer small shops and boutiques as well.

The Heiliggeistkirche church is the former home of the oldest library in Germany, whose contents are now partially on display at the University Library. For some great views of the city, visit Heiligenberg Mountain, where the ruins of an ancient Celtic wall and a 10^th century cloister are on display. The Philosophenweg is another spot with a great vista.

Heidelberg’s thriving student population fuels the city’s nightlife, with a mind-boggling array of bars and nightclubs available. From traditional pubs to student parties, visitors will have no trouble finding a good time. Bars close at various times, with some staying open into the early hours.

Travel Around Heidelberg

Several daytrips are possible from Heidelberg, whether by car, train or bus. The Ziegelhausen and Neuburg Benedictine monasteries are nearby sites worth visiting. In Handschuhsheim, tourists can view a 13^th century sunken castle, while there is another castle in Schwetzingen. For outdoors enthusiasts, the attractive forest region of Odenwald provides great opportunities for hiking.
