Alicante is one of the oldest cities in Spain as well as one of the fastest growing, it is off the east coast of the Costa Blanca. Archaeologists have discovered remains in Alicante from inhabitants who lived there over 7,000 years ago. By around 1000 BC, Alicante was already a well-known trading port. The Romans were the first to invade the area, and they occupied the city until the Moor invasion.

Over the centuries, the city changed hands many times and the economy declined until the 19th century export boom brought Alicante out of its slump. Having undergone a recent revitalization, the city is now fast becoming one of Spain’s tourism success stories for both package tours and independent travel.

Much of the city’s rich history is well-preserved. St Mary’s Church is a 14th century Gothic masterpiece with an elegant display of intricate detail and is the oldest church in Alicante.

Alicante Tourist Attractions

A stroll along Calle de Labradores will offer many displays of 18th century wealth. A visit to the Castillo de Santa Barbara will afford tourists gorgeous views of the city from the medieval fortress. A trip to Alicante warrants a stop at the oldest bull ring in Spain, still in use today.

Tourists flock to the beaches that make Alicante so popular. The Costa Blanca has miles of soft white sands and the climate is warm all year round. There are plenty of shopping malls and excellent restaurants specialising in fresh seafood.

Just outside of Alicante is the Moraira district, which is filled with quaint, secluded beaches ideal for those wanting to get away from the crowds. El Portet is an excellent choice for relaxing and enjoying the gentle waves.

Benidorm houses the thrilling theme and water parks Terra Mitica and Aqualandia Benidorm, a kid’s dream. The mountains in the area offer natural beauty and picturesque views.

Transport Around Alicante

The Alicante-Elche Airport is just six miles from the city centre. International flights are available daily to European destinations. Taxis and car rentals are also on hand.

Alicante is a friendly place to visit with plenty of bustling activities to keep travellers busy. One of the best ways to enjoy the Alicante tourist attractions is to travel around by hire car which can easily be picked up at the airport.
