Malaga Travel Guide

Just off the coast of southern Spain, facing the Mediterranean Sea, is a tourist’s treasure trove. With a year-round gentle climate and a great choice of Europe’s most gorgeous beaches, Malaga is a popular holiday getaway, it is one of the UK’s favourite tourists’ hot spots.

This Andalusian port city was the birthplace of world-renown artist Pablo Picasso. It’s also Spain’s most popular summer destination for Europeans, many of whom have holiday homes there.

Malaga Tourist Attractions

The Gibralfaro Castle is must for any itinerary. The hill on which the Moorish fort sits has a popular path that offers breathtaking views over the city. The Alcazaba, situated next to the castle, gives another glimpse of this period of Arabic occupation.

Malaga Cathedral houses a museum and a multitude of religious artworks and manuscripts. It is affectionately known as the ‘one armed lady’ due to its second tower having never been completed. Located next door is the Dioxesal Museum showcasing richly designed religious art. The Pablo Ruiz Picasso Public Foundation Museum is located inside the artist’s birth home, offering information about the artist’s life as well as a collection of the artist’s paintings and drawings.

Admittedly, it is the crystal warm waters that make Malaga so popular with tourists. The Costa del Sol is world renowned for its beaches, particularly nearby La Malagueta. Some areas may be densely packed, but more secluded waters are usually easy enough to find.

The lush golf courses make Malaga one of the most popular golfing hotspots of Europe. The courses in Malaga are of high quality and accommodation is available near the greens.

Exploring the surrounding areas is worthwhile, especially a trip to see the massive stalactites in 3,000-year-old caves in Nerja. Located just east of Malaga, this little village has quaint whitewashed homes dotted along the coast overlooking the sea.

Transport Around Malaga

Malaga Airport offers daily flights in and out of Madrid and the rest of Europe. Taxis are readily available here and car rentals are fairly inexpensive. If you are planning to drive or participate in any adventurous activities while in Malaga, it is recommended you take out travel insurance. If an illness or an accident should occur, you can rest easier knowing you will be spared paying those expensive medical costs.
