Sweden’s relaxed capital is spread across a number of easily navigable islands and offers a wide range of tourist attractions. In Stockholm there are plenty of affordable ways to see this picturesque city of waterways.

Skansen open-air museum sits upon a hill in Djurgården and is a wonderful place to see how history has been well-preserved within the city. Open to the public for more than 100 years, it is home to displays of ancient village life and a working village centre. Highlights include the Apartments of the Royal Orders of Chivalry and the Hall of State, both of which tourists are invited to view.

Stockholm Tourist Attractions

Visitors to Stockholm can truly appreciate a stroll around the old town or the many small islands and green parks to really soak up the atmosphere of the city’s unhurried place. Haga Park remains a popular retreat, offering tourists lovely walking and cycling trails and the Paviljong Butterfly House.

But perhaps the most celebrated attraction in Stockholm is Kungliga Slottet, the world’s largest castle still in use today, dating from the 17^th century. With more than 600 rooms, many of which are open to the public, it can be a pleasant place to wile away a few hours. The original 13^th century castle remains can be viewed at the Museum Tre Kronor, and fans of architecture will also enjoy the impressive Stadshuset.

Places of Interest Stockholm

More than 10,000 islands make up greater Stockholm, which entices tourists from all over. Visitors and local tourists alike head to some of the many bays and islets during the summer months. Ferries run to fixed route destinations, and it is easy to hop from place to place.

Vaxholm is a popular spot, with its collection of ancient buildings and charming summerhouses. Sigtuna contains ruins that are over 1,000 years old and makes for an enjoyable daytrip. For a taste of local folklore, visitors should head to the Folklore Museum in spa town Nynäshamn. Stockholm is home to a large international airport that services worldwide cities, making it an easy city to reach.

Despite Stockholm’s reputation for being a safe place to travel, purchasing sufficient travel insurance before you leave home is a must. Emergency dental and hospital bills can be pricey, and of course, as with all cities, there is always a risk of theft.
