On the northern banks of Lake Geneva, the lively university town of Lausanne is an interesting tourist destination. The magical city sits upon three hills and is surrounded by wineries and lakes. Packed full of cafés and bars, the cobbled streets of the old town are an enchanting place to soak up the atmosphere, while the new portion of town is home to the International Olympic Committee. From Ouchy lakefront tourists can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the Alps jutting out from over the lake.

The peaceful city of Lausanne overlooks Lake Geneva, but the city’s two universities give the place a transient and thriving feel as well. The Olympic Museum, with its incredible sculpture garden, is well worth a visit. The Collection de l’Art Brut and the Palais de Rumine are just some of Lausanne’s other excellent tourist attractions. The city has a lively nightlife.

Lausanne Tourist Attractions

The cathedral dominates the landscape here and is one of the best examples of early Gothic architecture in the country. The streets are crammed with boutiques and other small shops, making the old town a shopper’s paradise. Ouchy lakefront is the place to find some suitably classy bars and restaurants with spectacular views of the Alps. Here you can sample some of the local cuisine, such as lauchgratin (baked leek) and kohlwurst (cabbage sausage).

Transport Around Lausanne

Lausanne is situated in the southwest of Switzerland, and can be easily reached from the airport at Geneva. Train connections from the airport run directly into Lausanne. Zurich airport is also connected by rail, but the journey takes longer. Reaching Switzerland’s neighbours, Italy and France, is also relatively simple.
