Zermatt is a popular holiday destination, it’s located at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn in Switzerland. Surrounded by more than 20 staggering peaks, Zermatt still retains its traditional quaintness and attracts snowboarders and skiers from around the world. Horse-drawn carriages can still be seen moving along modern streets, and international hotels sit comfortably among traditional wooden chalets.

There are 245 miles of Zermatt ski slopes within easy access of Zermatt, spread over three separate areas. Around 55 per cent are dedicated to intermediate skiers, with the more experienced being able to make use of a further 36 per cent. There are nine slopes available for beginners to use. Modern lifts carry as many as 75,180 skiers up the mountains every hour, as high as 3900m, this means that the sport is available year round. There are incredible off-piste trails to be found, as well as an impressive chunk of cross-country skiing trails.

Non-skiers can enjoy a number of other winter sports such as horse-drawn sleighs, ice skating, mountaineering, gorge adventures and paragliding. Zermatt has an excellent reputation for aprés ski. A vast array of restaurants, bars and nightclubs is available, and for those in search of a more traditional experience, the resorts often host folklore evenings.

Zermatt Tourist Attractions

The centre of the town is pedestrianised and houses many amenities such as cinemas, museums and childcare facilities. There is a large choice of accommodation on offer to suit most budgets, ranging from traditional chalets to international hotels.

The nearby Italian ski resorts of Valtourneche and Cervinia are situated just over the border, and can be accessed by ski lifts from Zermatt. Passes for these resorts can be arranged from Zermatt as well.

Of course, if you plan to participate in any of the sports that Zermatt has on offer it is essential that you take out adequate insurance. Skiing and snowboarding can be dangerous pastimes and medical expenses tend to be high in Switzerland.
