Charleston is the largest city in the state of South Carolina. It is a major port on the Atlantic coast and  a historic centre of Southern culture. Charleston provides a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of many big cities in the US. The city oozes southern hospitality and a relaxing atmosphere and is home to a host of historic buildings and lovely natural spots. One of the most interesting areas in Charleston is the historic district, where tourists can explore to the best of the old town. Walking up and down lovely winding streets, you will feel as if you have travelled through time as you view old, beautiful homes with wide porches and stuccos of various colours. There are also several museums located in the area highlighting Charleston’s important role in the Civil War and slave trade.

If all that walking has tired you out, head for White Point Gardens where you can relax. The magnificent Waterfront Park is also famous both with tourists and locals while those feeling too hot to stay dry can always take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean’s waters at one of many beaches located not far from Charleston.

Making a daytrip out of Charleston is also a popular activity for those on holiday. In the north are Myrtle Beach and Cape Fear while you can also drive to the south and visit Savannah. If time permits, drive from Savannah to Jacksonville and you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the islands of St Simon’s and Jekyll.

Shopping Around Charleston

Shopping opportunities are also aplenty in Charleston. Several shopping streets and malls are scattered around the city centre while there are also a wide range of evening venues on offer around King, Board and Cumberland streets. If it’s live music you are after, many trendy bars in these areas feature a variety of bands every night.
