Cortina d'Ampezzo Travel Guide
Cortina d'Ampezzo is Italy's most popular ski resort, set amid the beauty and grandeur of the Dolomite Mountains. The adorable alpine village hosts a number of historic sights and served as the location for the 1956 Winter Olympics. Enjoyed not only by winter sport enthusiasts, many visitors come to immerse themselves in the majestic mountain vistas all year round.
A playground for the jet-set, the town is tucked away in the Ampezzo valley between two mountain ridges and ringed by towering peaks. Five different ski areas are accessible by bus, taxi, or ski lift, with sheltered, well-groomed runs and short lift line-ups. In summer, the sun-drenched valley is alive with alpine flowers.
Cortina d'Ampezzo Tourist Attractions
This pristine village supports a few great sights of historical value, including the 18th century parish church of Saints Filippo and Giacomo, and the small church of Madonna della Difesa which was built in 1,400 and restored in 1743. Both are adorned with sculptures and frescoes by Francesco Zeiler. Several hiking trails begin in Cortina for tourists, but hikers must be prepared for the high-altitude climbs.
Shops selling tourist items and ski supplies are located around town, and Cortina offers an excellent selection of fine dining establishments for the discerning palate. The nightlife is small but entertaining, with several options for an après ski drink. Skiing, snowboarding and hiking are the area's main activities, but daytrips to Venice can be easily arranged.
Transportation Around Cortina d'Ampezzo
Venice is the main gateway to Cortina, with busses leaving once a day. Alternatively, the Trenitalia train from Venice to Calalzo Di Cadore leaves Venezia St Lucia Station every morning, with a transfer to the Dolomitibus. International visitors land at Marco Polo International Airport Venice, and enjoy the beautiful drive through the mountains by hired car. Within the tiny town, walking is the main form of transportation, with all of the area's peaks reachable by ski-lift or cable car.
Travel insurance is recommended while visiting Cortina d'Ampezzo. While it is considered a safe place to visit, medical bills can be expensive when dealing with an accident or serious illness. Enjoy your trip knowing that you and your loved ones are covered in the event of a medical emergency.
