Chiang Mai Travel Information
Positioned in the hills of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is one of the most charming and beautiful cities in all of the country. With a long history dating back to 1296, which saw the settlement of the Lanna Kingdom, there is plenty of historic architecture and rich culture to view, making Chiang Mai what it is today. From wandering through the quaint old town filled with northern handicrafts to trekking tours through the surrounding mountains, Chiang Mai has something for everyone.
Chiang Mai Tourist Attractions
Chiang Mai temples are a popular tourist attraction and Chiang Mai has more than 300 dotted throughout the city. One of the more spectacular temples to see is Wat Phra That, which sits 1,000 metres high on the slopes of Doi Suthep Mountain.
From this temple tourists have a perfect uninterrupted view of Chiang Mai and the surrounding areas. Many of the other temples are scattered through the streets and sois in town, and feature some beautiful statues and monuments.
For shopping head to the night bazaar which is located just outside the moat area of town. Here you will find endless amounts of Thai handicrafts, in particular Lanna-styled clothes and ornaments. There are many restaurants, bars and people, which make for a lively atmosphere. On Sundays a huge market takes up most of the main area within the old town. With great shopping and tasty local cuisine coupled with interesting street performances and live local music, it is not to be missed.
Transport Around Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai International Airport is conveniently located just a 10 minute drive from the city centre. The airport has flights arriving and departing from all over the country and also neighbouring countries such as Laos, Myanmar, China and Singapore. With good road and rail links, taking the train, bus or even self-driving to Chiang Mai are great options.
Chiang Mai is a safe city, but as with anywhere when on holiday it is best to be alert to petty theft. Pickpockets sometimes operate around busy tourist areas, in particular the night markets, which is a perfect spot for thieves. Also it is advised to make sure your valuables are locked away in a hotel safe. Be extra vigilant when crossing the street, as with many motorcycles rushing through the city Chiang Mai's roads can be dangerous. For all these reasons it is advised to take out a comprehensive travel insurance policy for your family before travelling.
