The largest city and the capital of Cambodia is bordered by the Bassac, Tonlé Sap and Mekong rivers. Despite some still apparent damage from the communist takeover in 1975, Phnom Penh has achieved significant growth and maintained its rich and beautiful history and culture.

Palm trees line the streets and many of the homes are reminiscent of French villas and represent the city’s colonial and Khmer styles. Many tourists worldwide come to Phnom Penh to enjoy and appreciate its historical landmarks.

Phnom Penh Tourist Attractions

The 19^th century Royal Palace was home to Cambodia’s royal family until 1975. It faces the Mekong River and is accompanied by the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Silver Pagoda. Wat Phnom was built in 1373 and is the tallest religious building in the city, standing 27 metres high. Also considered one of the most important pagodas, it is the centre of many celebrations and festivals held throughout the year.

The National Museum features an impressive collection of artwork of the 18^th century. Nearby is the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument, a symbol of two countries’ alliances to end the Khmer Rouge regime’s hostilities. Tours are available and offer detailed accounts of events that created the history and culture of the Cambodian people.

Many restaurants and hotels are available throughout the city. The hotels offer modern amenities, including internet services. The restaurants are varied and serve many types of Asian and international cuisine.

Transport Around Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh International Airport has daily flights to most major cities in Southeast Asia. Taxis and motorcycle taxis are readily available. All major car rental agencies are accessible at the airport.

Do take precautions and carry limited belongings while walking around. Although the locals are quite friendly, pickpocketing is fairly common.
