If holidaymakers suffer an accident or theft of property without having proper travel insurance, they could be significantly out of pocket – particularly if they are not able to use their prepaid accommodation or holiday package – say UK travel experts.
"The price of some of British holidays is now pretty high," noted the manager of Schofield Insurance Brokers, David Gaskell. "With some large cottages costing over £1,000 a week to hire, you could lose a lot of money if you are forced to go on jury service or a close relative is rushed to hospital."
With the risks involved, determining whether travel insurance is needed for a holiday break in-country could be worthwhile. For any emergency healthcare requirements, the NHS will take care of the needs of UK residents, so when investigating travel cover, looking at policies that do not have a heath care provision will lead to a less costly premium.
An example of a typical policy would be one that pays out if you need to cancel your holiday at the last minute. At £20, says the Schofield manager, holidaymakers can secure £1,000 of cover for a holiday lasting eight days.
This type of policy covers cancellation costs, personal possessions against loss or theft and personal liability while in the UK. It also covers specified emergency medical costs, such as transportation to a medical facility nearer your home.
