The 12-month campaign aims to boast the country’s creative and cultural highlights in the international spotlight and depicts a wide array of images from across Scotland. Viewers will see everything dancing Aurora Borealis in the Northern Isles to a Glamis Castle performance of Macbeth. Also featured are fireworks as seen at the Edinburgh International Festival as well as Fife’s Pittenweem Arts Festival.

The advert, which features a voice-over by TV historian Neil Oliver, comes via VisitScotland’s ongoing Surprise Yourself scheme. The agency said the campaign generated an extra £90 million in tourism revenues in 2011.

Mike Cantlay, chairman of VisitScotland said in a statement that Scotland is approaching a “tremendously exciting” time in terms of tourism. He said the new TV adverted highlight a handful of the country’s contemporary and highly dynamic attractions, which he says the group believes will capture the hearts of millions of potential tourists.

Directed by David Eustace, a Glasgow native and photographer, the commercial is set to air for the first time on 13 January after its initial unveiling by Fiona Hyslop MSP, the culture secretary, at Edinburgh Castle earlier this week.
